Magic Carpet rides were prominent in the 1980s, with examples at Chessington and Alton Towers, among others. The rapid movement of the ride gondola, rotating on four arms, with the floor of the gondola always parallel to the ground, provided significant ‘air time’ and the ‘stomach drop feeling’ associated with spin rides.
Today, the Bikini Bottom Bus Tour operates in a similar manner, albeit in a much tamer fashion.
The Pleasure Beach ride opened in 1982 when Geoffrey Thompson rode an elephant through the park as part of the attraction’s publicity drive.
The Fliegender Teppich was one of a number of temporary rides set up on the south end of the park during the 1970s and 1980s before more modern permanent rides, fixtures and infrastructure were in place. Others included the Astroliner, Bobslay, Galaxy and Rock O Plane.
