The winding down of Manchester’s Belle Vue Zoological Gardens at the end of the 1970s saw most of its rides scrapped including the iconic ‘Bobs’ and Scenic Railway. There was however, a rare preservation win when the Pleasure Beach company moved the park’s Water Chute to Blackpool as a new for 1979 attraction. As part of the move, the wooden structure was replaced with a steel one.

The ride was a simple oval-shaped track with six-seater cars, culminating in a huge splash. It shared many technical characteristics with a side friction roller coaster like the Scenic Railway and Velvet Coaster.

With the impending arrival of Valhalla, the ride was given a Viking overlay and was rechristened Vikingar. After the opening of Valhalla, the ride was largely hidden from view and saw sporadic operation before it closed for good in 2003.

Similar rides operated at Rhyl, Battersea, Porthcawl and Margate, however, none remain.
