The Whip opened in 1920, featuring cars that travelled on an oblong course between two large wheels at either end, when the cars reached either of the wheels they ‘whipped’ around them, skidding out.

There is conflicting information as to when the ride arrived in Blackpool. ‘Century of Fun’ by Peter Bennett states that it arrived in 1914, however this is thought not to be the case. The concept was patented by William F Mangels in 1914 – that is perhaps where that year comes from. Press items in our collection from 1920 state that the ride was ‘this season’s feature’, therefore this is the date used in the database.

Unlike Ben Hur or other Skid rides, there was no rider interaction although the movement of the car was similar.
