The magnificant Derby Racer introduced in 1959 is perhaps one of the most impressive carousels in the world, its incredible scale and speed, coupled with its majestic band organ provide some of the most recognisable sights and sounds of the park. The ride sits under an elegant dome structure designed by Jack Ratcliffe.

The 'Stairway to Success' in the Arena was built for the Ice Parade of 1959 and has been used in every ice show since. It was built by a team led by Frank Wright, who was also responsible for the Wild Mouse and the Derby Racer.

Reaching speeds of up to 25mph, its 56 horses are positioned four abrest on a circular platform 25 meters in diameter. Built by an in-house team, the ride is based on a design by roller coaster legends Prior and Church who patented the Great American Racing Derby in 1913.

Similar rides continue to operate at Cedar Point, Ohio and Rye Playland, New York.
