"Ride the Witching Waves ..."
Several of the Pleasure Beach’s earliest rides came direct from Coney Island, the amusement park Mecca located in Brooklyn, New York City. The Witching Waves concept was devised by was invented by Theophilus Van Kannel, who also held a patent for a revolving door.
The first installation of the ride was at Luna Park in Coney Island in 1907, with a model arriving in Blackpool in 1913.
It consisted of a large oval course with a flexible metal floor, beneath it there was a mechanism that produced a wave-like motion, causing the cars to rise and fall, producing forward motion. Guests could steer their vehicles around the track.
The ride remained in Blackpool until 1923.
