An RAF helicopter brought Britain’s tallest and fastest men to Blackpool today to cut the turf for the colossal groundworks required for Project 94. The ceremony took place just over a year since approval for construction was granted by Blackpool Council.

Linford Christie, who won an Olympic Gold earlier this year in Barcelona and 7ft 6in Chris Greener performed the honours by removing the first sod from the Log Flume lake, which has been drained to aid construction.

The contract for the mammoth ride’s foundations has been awarded to Shepherd Construction of Manchester.
