YouTube Pick – Simply Red – Fairground (1995)

Fairground by Simply Red is an iconic song of the 1990s and with it came an iconic music video, largely focussed on the Pepsi Max Big One roller coaster that had opened the previous year.

The majority of the video is filmed on and around the ride, the award winning lighting scheme for the ride really shines in this footage. Scenes were also shot on the promenade in the illuminations and on Central Pier.

The video was shot on the night of September 6 1995 and was released less than a week later. Filming didn’t conclude until 2:30am the following morning, prompting an angry letter to the Blackpool Gazette from local resident Mrs. Butcher.

The single went straight to number one in late September 1995, the only Simply Red song to hit the top spot.
