Name Space Tower

Observation towers, or ‘Gyro Towers’ to use their production name, were fairly ubiquitous across amusement parks in Europe and the USA in the 1970s, however tight planning restrictions meant that there were relatively few installations in the UK.

Built by Intamin, the Space Tower debuted as the star turn for the 1975 season, offering panoramic views across the park and the Fylde coast beyond. It was one of the last attractions to be built during Leonard Thompson’s tenure as managing director.

❓Did You Know❓

After the opening of the iconic Space Tower in 1975, the park later introduced a smaller version of the same ride dubbed the Junior Space Tower. When the mini version of the ride was retired, it was incorporated into the reception area of the casino building as a decorative structure.

As planning for the construction of the Big One started, it was clear that the Space Tower would prove to be a significant obstacle for the new roller coaster that would run along the front of the property.

Although engineers had worked around the Log Flume, Big Dipper, Roller Coaster and several other rides & buildings, the Space Tower proved to be too much of an obstacle and it was decided that the ride would be removed and relocated to Frontierland at the end of the 1992 season.
