American teacher Richard Rodriguez has attempted a number of roller coaster riding records at parks around the world. Several have taken place at the Pleasure Beach, primarily on the Big Dipper, but also on the Big One.
In this video from the AP Archive channel, Richard is seen riding the Big Dipper. He remained aboard for 22 hours a day for 32 days, taking only a five minute break every hour. If you look closely, you will notice a special structure was added to the train for use outside of normal park operating hours, to protect him from the elements.
During this record breaking ride, there was a simultaneous rival attempt. Canadian Normand St Pierre was two days behind on Le Monstre at La Ronde in Montreal. After beating his existing record, Rodriguez stayed aboard a total of 1000 hours to beat out the competition and maintain his title.
Note – the riding position adopted in this video is obviously not ok to copy.
