Named for the Cakewalk dance, the earliest known example of these attractions date back to 1895 and became popular at the start of the 20th century.
They consist of two sides with participants walking along a moving bridge before returning on a parallel one. The bridges are mounted on cranks which give them an up and down motion. Some installations are also adorned with a band organ. Like many early rides, they were designed with spectators in mind.
Examples can still be found on modern fairgrounds today although they are becoming increasingly rare.
