Skid rides (also known as a Swirl) were introduced to the UK from Germany in the early 1920s.
The ride featured a similar motion to the The Whip, but required riders to press a pedal to cause the car to ‘skid and swing’ rather than it occurring automatically. Although a classic concept, Ben Hur was a modern take built by Huss Rides, with it opening in 1983.
Upon its retirement, it was relocated to American Adventure and operated in the dark as G-Force. Similarly, the Pleasure Beach company operated another Skid ride at Pleasureland, eventually known as Black Hole that also operated in the dark.
