The Big Dipper was hit by fire earlier today, heavily damaging the loading area and the iconic tower turnaround above the station. The ride was closed at the time, meaning that guests were not in the vicinity, however, fireman Frank Maynard was struck by a falling beam and was taken to hospital with shoulder and neck injuries.

The damaged station was designed by Joseph Emberton when the ride was extended in 1936.

The intense heat from the fire also damaged the Electric Speedway and Octopus rides.
